Astronomy Picture of the Day

NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day: Galaxies NGC 3239 and SN 2012A
And it seems that the weeks are going by nearly as fast as the weekends! It’s been all good, though; the lack of posting this week was due to my workload really picking up. Something I always approve of! This weekend and next week I’ll be sure to plan ahead a little bit better so that I can at least get my daily posts out.

For now, enjoy this: today’s entry in NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day of NGC 3239 and SN 2012A.

About 40,000 light-years across, pretty, irregular galaxy NGC 3239 lies near the center of this lovely field of galaxies in the galaxy rich constellation Leo. At a distance of only 25 million light-years it dominates the frame, sporting a peculiar arrangement of structures, young blue star clusters and star forming regions, suggesting that NGC 3239 (aka Arp 263) is the result of a galaxy merger. Appearing nearly on top of the pretty galaxy is a bright, spiky, foreground star, a nearby member of our own Milky Way galaxy almost directly along our line-of-sight to NGC 3239. Still, NGC 3239 is notable for hosting this year’s first confirmed supernova, designated SN 2012A. It was discovered early this month by supernova hunters Bob Moore, Jack Newton, and Tim Puckett. Indicated in a cropped version of the wider image, SN 2012A is just below and right of the bright foreground star. Of course, based on the light-travel time to NGC 3239, the supernova explosion itself occurred 25 million years ago, triggered by the core collapse of a massive star.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Looking Back, Looking Forward

Happy 2012 to you all! I can’t believe what a year 2011 was… let’s reminisce, shall we?

2011 in Review
January / February: Settled back into our slow beach town, Encinitas. My succulent garden really started to grow! Worked hard to pick up clients for nomBat. The glory of Craigslist finds! Pretty mellow, but that’s why we moved there.

March / April: Got to know spots around town. My favorites were the Self Realization Fellowship meditation garden and Swami’s beach. Made a ton of promotional materials. Opened the blog back up. My cousin, Lane, got hitched! Got to go to a HUGE pet show and see some of our work in person.

2011 in Review
May / June: The Surfing Virgin of Guadalupe. Our great buddy, Diana, came for a visit! Nia had a baby girl! Worked on the Calligraphic States a lot.

July / August: Fireworks on The Fourth, at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Jack had fun with the local Carlsbad Amtgard crew. Road trip: Encinitas to Whidbey Island, Washington! Morgan and Lizen got married in a beautiful beach ceremony! Spent some time in Santa Cruz on the way back down the coast and found an apartment super close to Jack’s family… aaaand we promptly wrapped things up in SoCal and moved up to Santa Cruz!

September / October: Getting into the Santa Cruz groove. Begonia Festival and The Art & Wine Festival. We started The Santa Cruz Pop-Up Art Party! So great being so close to friends and family!

November / December: Worked hard on Art Party shows and on my “Ladies in Type” series. Heidi and Brandon got married! My parents came for a visit for over the Thanksgiving holiday and got meet Jack’s family. Trips to Carmel, Monterey, San Francisco and Napa Valley. Gift sales and holiday festivals! Back to Atlanta for Christmas. Katie got engaged!

With all that we have coming up (The Art Party, new prints for the shop, nomBat projects, etc.) we could not be any more excited for what 2012 has in store for us! LOVE!

Tour of California’s Surfing Beaches

Tour of California's Surfing Beaches
Thanks to my dad for sending me this slideshow of Cali’s beachside campgrounds (featuring Encinitas).

In the 1930s, surfing’s popularity grew at the same time California’s newly founded State Park Commission was looking for beaches and waterfront property to protect, and many of the best surf breaks on the coast became parkland.

Candy’s Grace & Anna

Candy's Grace & Anna
We picked up September Issue this past weekend, and both Jack and I agreed: Grace Coddington (their creative director) stole the show from under Anna’s feet! She’s fabulous!

Anyways, was looking up about her came across this spread from Candy, a transvestism, transexuality, cross dressing and androgyny style magazine, via Coco Perez. Made me smile!

Update Time

Swami's Beach at Sunset, Encinitas
Weeeeell… to say it’s been a while would be a huge understatement! I honestly thought things would be back, up and running by September, but, you know sometimes things just get in the way. So much has happened in the last few months!

Greenport, LI

Greenport, Long Island
Well, this weekend couldn’t have been any better if we had actually planned it!

Saturday: Jack and I went with our tried and true method of taking a train to the end of its line and seeing what’s there. This time the LIRR! The plan was Montauk (where Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet meet in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind!), but due to its less than stellar schedule, at the last minute we went with Greenport. It’s about a 3 hour ride out there and though it’s not along the water, which we had hoped for, you do go through so neat vineyard, farmland and woods. We nibbled on macarons, made some phone calls, played with these adorable French flash cards my mom sent and watched the landscape go by. Arriving at about 5:00, we found that the last train of the day was going to leave in an hour. So, it was either find a place to stay for the night or have to rush any sight seeing and run back to the train. Luckily, at the last minute, we found a great little inn, dropped off our bags and poked around the town.

Sunday: We woke up early and checked out. We poked around the town further, now getting to see some of the shops that had been closed the night before. Great antique stores! Though the main strip was wonderful, my favorite part about the town are its neighborhoods. It was adorable house after adorable house. I wanted to move in, right there and then! We talked to a bunch of the locals and took in the incredible weather while sipping coffee in the park. It was the perfect spur-of-the-moment vacation!

I’m looking forward to our next trip out. We’re going to rent bikes and take the ferry out to Shelter Island! Exciting!!
