Neat Links From My Father, Take 2

Neat Links From My Father
The emails have been piling up, so here goes the second edition (which I’m also calling the “NY Times edition”) of “Neat Links From My Father!”
- A “good and cheap” Chinese restaurant in the city, I will have to investigate and give my input.
- Get inspired by the creativity and thriftiness of college students!
- More from the NY Times, this time an article about Shepard Fariey (probably the most famous for his Andre the Giant / OBEY and Obama posters).
- Hidden Parks of NYC
- Google releases a HopStop-like (a transit navigational site) feature for New York and New Jersey. But, unlike HopStop, Google works directly and is affiliated with the MTA, Port Authority and NJ Transit.
- Who doesn’t love Barbar?
- Moose Hunting with Woody Allen.

More Banksy in NYC

More Banksy in NYC
We heard he put up another so we tracked it down, as well! It’s in a much more prominent and more highly trafficked area, at Broadway and Howard.

Banksy NYC Rat

Banksy NYC Rat
Just coming up for a few minutes and a quick post…

After being tipped off by OnePlusInfinity that infamous artist Banksy had painted a mural downtown, in SOHO (Wooster and Grand), Jack and I tracked it down last night. Very, very cool.

P.S. Jack, feel free to expand upon this, if you wish. :)
P.P.S. Now, back to work, for me!

Neat Links From My Father, Take 1

Neat Links From My Father
My dad likes to email me cool things he finds on the nets… but, me saving them, fill up inbox so much. So in an effort to keep things clean and archive the interesting stuff Dad finds I’m making a little series. Thanks Dad and keep ‘em comin’ (some of these might look very very old to you)!
- OpenZine: online magazine publishing software.
- Matching tattoos of Comets, War and Love.
- I love me some New York jazz!
- More cool stuff from Read Write Web: Five Amazing Color Palette Generators.
- “It’s about some project called ‘Dear Lulu’ that attempts to illustrate the capabilities of digital printing.”
- Suggested gifts for Jack: subatomic particle plushies @ The Particle Zoo.
- NPR talks about “Perfecting the Art of Frugal Living in NYC.”
- New York Times’ Lessons From the Frugal Grand Tour.
- More Intelligent Life asks “Are Men Boring?”
- Story about the 125th birthday of the Brooklyn Bridge.
- Funny Mac Rant video. (Be sure and wait until the very end!)

Fashion Week, Spring 2009
I finally gathered up the guts to ask for a raise and I got it! Last night Jack and I went to Pershing Square (right out side Grand Central) to celebrate! YUM!

Afterward we walked over to Bryant Park and took a snapshot of all the hoopla going on there (and hoping to see Tim Gunn). Oh, I would love love love to go to the Project Runway show!!

On a side note, do these look like knockoff Manolos to you?
Manolo Blahnik
Someone threw out a bag of shoes and these were sitting on top. They’re pretty neat and they fit me, I just need to fix the heels.

Hurricane Season in NYC

We are well into Hurricane season, and although I am glad we are not dealing with the brunt of it. I’m sure it will be exciting to see the tail end of Tropical Storm Hannah come through this weekend.

The Hurricane season continues through November First, so we may get some additional excitement out of this season as well.

In California, El Nino was often a treat, when you could find your self a safe seat on the cliffs or sometimes on the seawall of a sheltered beach and watch the 15+ foot waves consume buildings on the ocean fronts and wharfs. I am having a similar feeling looking at the New York Preparadness hurricane evecuation map. With a tropical storm on its way I’d like to find myself and Jules a nice comfortable apartment and have some friends over to watch the ‘FDR waterpark’ for an afternoon.

As a side bonus reading through the NYC Preparedness page has encouraged me to go out and buy enough water to fill the rest of the kitchen storage we have left.. and then some.

Getting Used to NYC

Getting Used to NYC
I have a love/hate relationship with tourist pits in this city. I hate dealing with slow-moving, in-the-way, picture-taking tourists. But, at the same time I love the feeling of knowing that I live in a place most people only get to sample. I count myself as such a lucky person to live here. I wake up a city so alive our floor shakes from time to time (or that could be the construction down the street… but I digress).

I didn’t always feel this way. My transition period was not a smooth one. Many nights there were tears and questions of what I was doing here. I was amazed by how a city so full of people could be so lonely. I was told when I moved here it would take about a year to get in the groove of things, and boy were they right. Nearly a year after I moved here it was as if I was pulled out of a cave and was dancing my way around the streets. And, once you get into the groove of New York, it’s the most amazing thing! Falling in love doesn’t hurt much, either. ;)

I loved reading (in the below article) how similar my experience were to others who decide to take a chance on living here!

Sometime over the course of a person’s first year in New York, there usually comes that moment. It can happen in the first days or weeks, or after 10 months. It can happen repeatedly, or without people noticing, at least not at first.

Newcomers suddenly realize either that the city is not working for them or that they are inexorably becoming part of it, or both. They find themselves walking and talking faster.

The subway begins to make sense. Patience is whittled away; sarcasm often ensues. New friends are made, routines established, and city life begins to feel like second nature. In other words, newcomers find themselves becoming New Yorkers.

Randomness

The Hulk and Kung Fu Panda
Just a post about a bunch of things, at once. Thursday we saw Hellboy 2 (Jack enjoyed it, but I thought it was okay) and I wore my fabulous new thrift shoes (which I got while on our Santa Cruz trip, for $5). The rest of the weekend was spent further painting, cleaning and general spritzing up of our new place (YAY for fresh flowers!). We made book cases out of the drawers and slats from my old IKEA bed (hmmm, they don’t seem to be selling it anymore). It’s so much fun putting this place together! It’s, finally, really starting to come together… housewarming party coming soon!
