Neat Links From My Father, 4

Neat Links From My Father
Spring cleaning for my email.

- This year marks the 50th anniversary for one of my favorite albums, Kind of Blue.
- Commercializing the Obamas.
- I would love to have this job!
- Leapfrog’s ‘Baby BlackBerry’ Targets Preschool Set. Ugh!
- I think Hollywood is officially out of ideas.
- I glad I’m not the only one who just doesn’t get Twitter. (The video’s really funny, even for those fond of the site.)
- Although the last thing I need to do it buy more furniture, I need to check out the eye candy at the new Droog store.
- Love the site and if I had an iPhone, Lord knows What the Font would be on it!
- My old neighborhood, Morningside Heights, wants to designate itself a historic district. Love that area of town.
- Heard the word “ohrworm?” Literally “ear worm”, it refers to a catchy song that you just can’t get out of your head.
- 10 “facts” (posted in April 1st).
- Charged black holes & Whoville.
- Fermi problems (“How many piano tuners are there in Chicago?”)
- I want a glow-in-the-dark puppy. What a cutie!
- When Jack Resnick and Sons became landlords to the bakery Crumbs, they worked some cupcakes into the deal.

Confusing Tyranny with Losing

Jon Stewart on his A-game is the most amazing thing (not that it doesn’t happen a lot… just this time, wow)! Bravo!

Glaser on Fairey

Glaser on Fairey
I’m honestly not sure how I feel about the whole possible lawsuit against Shepard Fairey’s poster (which turns out, now, that he’s filing a lawsuit against them), but it’s interesting to hear other designers discuss the drama. Designer of the incredibly famous “I ♥ NY” logo, Milton Glaser, gave his opinion:

For myself—this is subjective—I find the relationship between Fairey’s work and his sources discomforting. Nothing substantial has been added. In my own case, when I did the Dylan poster, I acknowledged using Duchamp’s profile as an influence. I think unless you’re modifying it and making it your own, you’re on very tenuous ground. It’s a dangerous example for students, if they see that appropriating people’s work is the path to success. Simply reproducing the work of others robs you of your imagination and form-making abilities. You’re not developing the muscularity you need to invent your own ideas.

Howdy!

Obama Cupcakes
Well, a lot sure has happened since I last posted!

First off, everybody, I’d like to introduce you to Barack. He’s going to be our president for the next four (eight!!) years. His inauguration speech was so amazing and I’m feeling quite optimistic about things to come. Jack and I threw little party at our place; at which, things got a little out of hand, but all-in-all we had a grand ol’ time! The above, delicious, cupcakes were courtesy of our great friend, Rei!

Weekend with the Parents
It’s been a while, huh? Well, this little hiatus, actually isn’t quiet over, yet. I’m almost finished with my presents, with two more to go. But, I did want to quickly post a few picture taken from when the ‘rents were in town. The weather could have been better, but we made the most of it and had a fabulous time!

Borrowing a (web) page
I mean, I have seen people leach off popular and successful design, but man, this is so blatant and public!

The colors, the fonts, the icons for donating and volunteering, the use of videos, and the social networking Facebook-type options — including Twitter, which hardly exists in Israel — all reflect a conscious effort by the Netanyahu campaign to learn from the Obama success.

Those who created the Obama Web site, including Thomas Gensemer, managing partner of Blue State Digital, say the Netanyahu site is closer to Mr. Obama’s than any others they have seen.
