I caught this great segment of PBS’s Art21 series: Humor. The last artist they focused on was Walton Ford and I was really taken by his masterful watercolor and prints!

Blending depictions of natural history with political commentary, Ford’s meticulous paintings satirize the history of colonialism and the continuing impact of slavery and other forms of political oppression on today’s social and environmental landscape. Each painting is as much a tutorial in flora and fauna as it is as a scathing indictment of the wrongs committed by nineteenth-century industrialists or, locating the work in the present, contemporary American consumer society.

Last night I added my Destination watercolors to our shop as ACEO card prints! I still plan on doing more, since Jon and I have a lot of cities we want to see, but, as-of-now, it’s Florence, Tokyo, Cancun and Nice!

Here’s the full, first series, as mentioned last week. Picking 4 cities we plan to visit in the near future, I made little 3″ x 4 1/2″ watercolor paintings of each. I shall do more soon; Lord nows there are a number more cities on this list!

Just a little project I’ve been working on. The above is a painting of the Sensō-ji Temple in Tokyo, Japan. This weekend is a travel one, so I shall post pictures of the completed pieces next week. Have a fabulous weekend! <3

I had an impulse to one more for my watercolor bird series and I wanted something pink this time! I had to do a little rearranging, but they fit together quite nicely now.

So, the series is complete, for now, and I couldn’t be happier with how they all turned out! They are all sitting pretty in our front room, which I hope to get pictures of this weekend, once I have time to finish up on spring cleaning.
The last of this series was the falcon, which I’m dedicating to Jack. <3 Here are some detail shots:

I have been in such a painting mood recently and it’s great! I’m trying to see how many of these bird watercolors I can crank out. Painting birds seems so odd, too, because I’m usually so much more interested in people (and portraiture, more specifically). But, I’m really having a lot of fun, so why stop? Next up, the cardinal!

I haven’t been so happy with a final product in a while! The peacock is another watercolor painting and the frame is, obviously enough, made from a bunch of found wooden rulers. (Those were a wonderful find and I’m glad I’m finally being able to use them.)

For my last birthday, Jack gave me the greatest present: art supplies! He got me some watercolor pencils and a watercolor block. I’ve been playing with them off and on, since, and I thought I would post a recent project. I’ve never really done progress shots before, so this is very neat to see. Though, I am a little irritated at the blurriness of these photos… they looked fine on the screen on the camera. I don’t think the painting is quite finished, I need to push the skin tone a little bit more. (Pushing colors is something I struggle with, since graphite was my first medium of choice.) Once finished I shall post the finial fruits of my labor!
